Gov. Quinn abolishes death penalty in Illinois, clears death row

Criminals all over Illinois are shouting, "Hallelujah!"

Today, Governor Pat Quinn signed a law banning the death penalty in Illinois; releasing 15 inmates from death row and guaranteeing them free room and board for life.

In order to ensure that innocent people are not put to death, Quinn and his supporters felt the ban was necessary. The Governor also said banning the death penalty in Illinois put the state on the "right side of history".

Some argue the death penalty does not deter criminals and because of the lengthy appeals associated with a death sentence - death row is too costly.

It's going to be an interesting summer in Illinois; especially, Chicago.

  1. Although I think the death penalty is heavily weighted towards minorities and poor people, this is not a good thing. Some people need to go.

  2. Whatever number of criminals were kept in line by the threat of the death penalty - has been lost. So, no matter how you look at it, the new law is a game-changer.

  3. I believe in the death penalty for the people who are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt as many of them are. Are there some mistakes, sadly yes, but that is the fault of the law for not doing everything possible with all the DNA testing today. No criminal is EVER going to admit to the crime, even as they take their last breath.

All the people who preach the bible and than are against the death penalty preach the bible for their own agenda's. How about "an eye for an eye" you can start at Ex 21:23 and than find the other 2 scriptures on it. It MEANS exactly what it says!

We are giving murderers more than a great majority of law-abiding citizens in this country have. Wish I didn't have to pay for my education, or a gym membership(which I don't have) or buy my groceries, pay for laundry or pay for a roof over my head or electric etc.etc. HOWEVER, I am NOT going to become a criminal to do that and WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE MURDERERs UPKEEP!

YOU BLEW IT BIG TIME QUINN! THANKS FOR MAKING THIS CITY EVEN LESS SECURE!

  4. what about all the innocent blacks and latinos on death row? the laws are racist and prejudicial. no wonder so many have been freed by the innocence project. gov quinn did the right thing!

  5. The death penalty is most useful in the interrogation of a group of suspects. When the police are trying to turn one suspect against the others. When presented with a choice of 10 years in jail versus a death sentence many offenders will cooperate and give up the goods on their cohorts. Taking this tool away will hamstring many efforts at conviction. I think that the Governor is mistaken.

  6. SugarBear,
Do you have any statistics backing up your claim that there are all these "innocent blacks and latinos on death row"? INNOCENT being the key word here. Statistically, blacks & latinos commit more crimes. All you have to do is read this blog to figure that out. And do you really want to go there with me after the murders in Edgewater?

How right you are! Now what bargaining chip do they have to play..."life in prison"?

Since Quinn took the death penalty off the table, there should not be any deals made with criminals either!

    We are screwed!

  7. Sitting in jail and not getting a trial for 2.5 years, evidence misplaced and witnesses never questioned until they can't remember the details is a problem. There are more innocent people in jail / prison than you might think. If you can't afford a private attorney, you are not assured a fair trial you are assured a failed trial.
