There is a disturbing pattern of violence emerging from a Chicago, Wicker Park nightclub. So… what is the 1st Ward Alderman doing about it?
Last weekend, there was a shooting at 1142 North Ashland Avenue. Authorities said the shooting appeared to be related to a 3 a.m. brawl at Evil Olive, 1551 West Division Street.
At least one man was taken into custody at the nightclub.
No arrests have been made and police are still investigating the Ashland Avenue shooting.
January 21, 2011, at 4:04 a.m., a man and a woman were attacked, either inside or outside the venue. The female victim wasn’t seriously injured, but the male complainant’s injuries required medical attention.
One suspect was arrested.
December 18, 2010, around 2:38 a.m., a shooting occurred at Evil Olive. A female patron was reportedly struck by gunfire.
Authorities identified one of the shooters as a member of the Spanish Cobra street gang. It isn’t clear if any arrests were made in connection with that shooting.
A few days ago, I sent an email to Proco "Joe" Moreno, the Alderman of the 1st Ward. I wanted to know if the alderman was aware of the violence at Evil Olive. More importantly, I wanted to know what he is doing to stop it.
Today, I received the following response from Matthew Bailey, the Director of Communications for Alderman Moreno.
“We are aware of the two incidents covered in your story.
In cooperation with the police and the appropriate city departments, we are continuing to monitor the venue.
Police are still investigating the two incidents. If you want further information about these two specific cases, please contact their news affairs division.”
According to Evil Olive’s business license information: Matthew H. Lindner is listed as the President; James N. Runnfeldt is listed at the Vice President; and Tom Wang is the club’s secretary.
A limited search of Cook County Court records gave no indication the men have been involved in recent court cases.
The Better Business Bureau has no record of Evil Olive and I was unable to unearth any business code violations.
WOW, with a response like that, he should be gone in the next election. That tells me he doesn't know what YOU know Timothy and therefore, doesn't care about his ward. Maybe it's about making 100K+ for a part time job that's more important to him. People MUST hold their elected officials accountable, it's their civic duty!
ReplyDeleteI was expecting a better response. Very disappointing.
ReplyDeletewow, what a let down of a response from a newly elected alderman. i don't even attend this place and know its a drug hole / place where anything goes. BUT, the bloodshed/violence on top of this, that is just too hard to be overlooked. Shocked and extremely concerned.
ReplyDelete"i don't even attend this place and know its a drug hole / place where anything goes. BUT, the bloodshed/violence on top of this, that is just too hard to be overlooked." if you have never been there? how do you know? blood shed violence? easy now.
ReplyDeleteIt would be very simple for the alderman to squash this place. Why hasn't he? Very disappointed.
ReplyDeleteHe is busy trying to ban "Plastic Bags" which according to him is a very pressing issue.
ReplyDeleteIs there an update to this story? There was a recent shooting last Friday, November 4, 2011 in front of La Pasadita Restaurant around 1100 N. Ashland? This is eerily close to Evil Olive and sounds so similar. We haven't been told if it was gang related or something else, but these guys also shot a couple on Augusta and Milwaukee that same evening. Below is the community alert info.
