Wells and Chicago: aggressive panhandler shoots police officer in River North neighborhood

Around 4 p.m. this evening, a Chicago police officer was shot by a man described by authorities as an "aggressive panhandler".

Officers responding to a disturbance near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Wells Street in Chicago's River North neighborhood, encountered a man aggressively begging for money, said police.

After placing the offender in the back of a squad car, the so-called panhandler got his hands on a gun and managed to graze a 44-year old police officer in the back or shoulder -- while firing at least eight gunshots outside the Moody Bible Institute.

A second officer's hand was injured by shattered glass.

Moments later, another officer on the scene returned fire, striking and killing the offender.

Reportedly, both wounded officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Chicago Police Department has neither confirmed nor denied that the gun the panhandler used to shoot the officer, belongs to one of the cops at the scene.

  1. This sounds so "sketchy" it's pathetic. Where'd the gun come from? How'd he get his hands, that were cuffed in the back, on a gun and than fire? They're trying to make this guy out to be "Houdini" or something. This just doesn't sound right.

  2. I thought police usually frisk/pat-down a suspect when they are being taken into custody. Where was the gun?
