Video Chicago Blizzard 2011: Abandoned Cars, Buses on Lake Shore Drive

Last evening, as a blizzard of historic proportions gripped Chicago in a wintry chokehold, hundreds of citizens were entombed in record snowfalls on Lake Shore Drive and throughout the metropolis.

The Windy City fell silent as traffic came to a dead stop.

After waiting hours for help that never arrived, many motorists abandoned their vehicles and scrambled to the nearest shelter.

Their decision to ditch their vehicles hampered Chicago's cleanup efforts and most importantly, prevented Chicago police officers and emergency crews from reaching injured citizens in need of assistance.

Reportedly, it took the city most of the day to tow the abandoned cars, trucks, and CTA buses to temporary storage lots.

The people who left their cars behind are now faced with the seemingly insurmountable task of locating and retrieving their vehicles.

The Chicago blizzard of 2011 will never be forgotten. Hopefully, the brutal lessons that came with it, will be remembered as well.
