Man Involved in Near North Side Robbery Arrested in Uptown

This evening, some time around 5:30 p.m., a woman was robbed near a Near North Side restaurant.

According to Chicago police dispatch reports, the robbery occurred at 1166 North State Street. The address belongs to an eatery called Chipotle.

It isn’t clear if the robbery happened inside or outside the restaurant. I wasn't able to determine if the woman was pickpocketed or the victim of a blatant robbery. But the woman’s wallet was stolen, said police.

An off-duty Chicago police officer is credited with following the offender to an Uptown gas station.

At approximately 5:55 p.m., the thief was taken into custody at the BP gas station at 755 West Lawrence Avenue, near the intersection of Lawrence and Marine Drive.

ehow.com has some interesting tips on how to avoid pickpockets.

  1. This Chipotle is at the corner of State & Division, generally a busy area. There is an SRO on division, west of Clark, called the Mark Twain. There's another one on Dearborn south of North ave. Thankfully the "Cedar @ Elm & State shut down but this area has become infested with thugs, dealers and panhandlers. THEY are everywhere and come from EVERYWHERE to "feed" off the rest of us! Oh, and the police District for the area is only a few blocks away, for whatever good that does.

  2. Towanda, I stopped frequenting that area in the early 90s.

Even back then, you couldn't go into the Dunkin Donuts or the Popeye's Chicken place in that neighborhood, without being harassed by bums.

  3. Did I mention how much I LOVE Chipotle?! Very addictive!
