Some time this evening, around 6:30 p.m., a group of African-American teenage shoplifters swarmed a downtown Chicago GAP clothing store.
Police said the juvenile offenders were caught on tape stealing merchandise from the Michigan Avenue retailer.
The robbery occurred at the GAP at 555 North Michigan Avenue.
At 7:07 p.m., police spotted seven or eight teens near the intersection of North State Street and East Chicago Avenue. The officer said the subjects matched the description of the teens who robbed the GAP clothing store.
Authorities received a tip that the shoplifters might have changed their clothes, and were possibly wearing the stolen articles of clothing.
However, according to the officer who stopped the teens at State and Chicago, the subjects didn’t appear to have any stolen merchandise on them.
I have not been able to confirm if any arrests were made.

MICHIGAN Ave. is the LAST thing Chicago has going for it and even that is going right down the tubes with a quickness. You had at least 4 very, very aggressive black panhandlers outside of Water Tower this evening chasing (even inside of the stores) what?......White people, namely White men.
ReplyDeleteI'll start taking videos if this continues. If your police can't take care of your "gem" of a downtown, I'm wondering exactly where they might be. Uptown?
BTW, thanks for this site Timothy (and for reporting what other news sources in Chicago are afraid to).
Very, VERY aggressive out there tonight. Scary too.
If everyone who witnesses stuff like this started using their video cam on their cell phones, it might help. I read an article today by Walter Williams, an economist at George Mason University, that stated "70% of black children are now born to single moms today" "while in the 1940's 75%-85% were born to 2 parent households." He also made this remarkable comment ""The welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery couldn't do, what Jim Crow couldn't do, what the harshest racism couldn't do," Mr. Williams says. "And that is to destroy the black family."
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say but I have to agree with him. This seems to be of the problem with the crimes in the city AND across the country. Why aren't these "fathers" being held accountable for their children? Single unwed mothers should have to start giving the fathers info so they pay for their children and we don't have too. I used to know a couple who weren't married but lived together and had 2 children. they had been together for a long time too. The mom NEVER listed the father as living with them. The father worked(construction) and the mother collected welfare & food stamps. She said if they married, she wouldn't get that..that's a fact! That too is part of the welfare system and it's problems. ALL of this combined create the crime elements preying on society.
Anonymous..Michigan Ave is not all Chicago has going for it..sorry to disagree with you. We find many great things to do in this city, thugs be DAMNED!
Anon, I heard about those aggressive panhandlers. There wasn't enough information to do a complete story. So I am glad you shared that information with us!
ReplyDelete"Why aren't these "fathers" being held accountable for their children?"
ReplyDeleteWhat fathers? Most of these children are born due to promiscuous unprotected sex. The mommas would have to to a DNA test on half the damn neighborhood before they could find out who "da baby daddy is!" And don't get me started on the illiteracy rate among these government freeloaders!
"Tell da truth fool"...you certainly have a point:)
ReplyDeleteThe Gap @ 555 is Grand & Ohio. The 744 adress is the Banana Republic, which is owned by The Gap . I'm pretty sure there's only 1 Gap on Michigan ave. Yelp is listing the Gap on State & Madison as closed..anyone know anything about that?
ReplyDeleteIm a Police Officer in the 018TH district and the robberies and pick pocketing is out of control, sometimes their are no police officers available because they are processing shoplifters at the station.their are thousands of victims of pickpockets and 1500 robbery victims a year.this week we had a woman robbed and pistol wipped in lincoln park ,did the media cover that
ReplyDeleteThis city is starting to remind me of how it was in the 1980s. Constant pick-pockets, smash and grabs, and armed robberies. You can take out your i-phone to video crimes, but it will likely get snatched out of your hand. Phone thefts right now are in the hundreds each week.
ReplyDeletetowanda, if you want to know where the fathers are, try Maury .
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I was here in the 1980s, but don't remember that constantly happening in "Greater Downtown".
I was here as well an way before that. I do not recall this City as bad as it is now. People back in those times seemed to have more respect than they do now and I attribute that to the parents or lack of parenting. "Keeping your legs closed and pants zipped up" might be a start!
ReplyDeleteTechnically, I have been here since the mid 1960s, but was only 3 when the 1960s ended. :)
ReplyDeleteRudy, too bad, you missed out on a GREAT time:)
ReplyDeletetowanda, there's always Leave It To Beaver, Father Knows Best, Bewitched, The Monkees, etc. I can watch these old analog shows on digital television-that's progress! :)
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is:) I often refer to myself as "Hazel"..LOL
ReplyDeleteI love Hazel on Antenna TV now and when it previously aired in the 1970s and 1980s/1990s.
ReplyDelete......"processing shoplifters". If they fit the profile (oops, can't do that in liberalismland here as it wouldn't be "PC") I say call out one of them Chicago paddy wagons (saw 'em all over Andersonville but never in your gem of a downtown), lock 'em up, ask questions later and go after the the "newbies". I truly think the hooligans in Chicago know exactly when, where and how they can get away with what they do.....get away with.
ReplyDeleteGet this news out to India, Italy, France, Japan, Scotland, Canada, Schaumburg, Naperville, Indiana who love that "mall" and see how long your "world class city" lasts.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the correction. You're right. The only Gap on Michigan Ave. is the one at 555 North.
I didn't realize the Gap on State Street was closed! I need to get our more.
Today I was waiting for the bus at Water Tower Place after leaving Best Buy and a guy was yelling at the top of his lungs "Can you help? Can you help? CAN YOU HELP?" A half hour had transpired since I had gone into Best Buy and he was still at it, so I called the cops and said he was panhandling aggressively. Why should shoppers at WTP have to put up with that $^it?
ReplyDeleteNo one wants to say this is a BLACK CRIME problem and why when blacks hanging out on rainy nights wearing hoodies get profiled.
ReplyDeleteWithout making racist remarks, I or anyone else has nothing to say...That is the problem with this country...The truth needs to be racist or it continues to be covered up by all of the media lies...
