Mayor Daley to Sidestep Teachers Union and Hire Non-teachers

If you have a little one in elementary school, Mayor Daley plans to add 90 minutes to your child‘s school day. The additional hour and 30 minutes will be spent on math and reading. But will it prove to be a monumental waste of time… and money?

The Chicago Teachers Union’s contract limits the amount of time educators spend at work; so, Daley plans to hire non-teachers (at a much lower rate of pay) to oversee the extended classes. That means people who are barely qualified to train a puppy, will be responsible for the safety and education of your children.

The “Additional Learning Opportunities” program is scheduled to kickoff at Walsh Elementary School, located at 2031 South Peoria Street, in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. If the pilot program is a hit, it will infect spread to all of Chicago’s public elementary schools.

What is this experiment going to cost the taxpayers? Glad you asked. According to the grapevine, the tab for the additional 90 minutes is expected to “exceed” 10 million dollars. And if this project is anything like the other projects spearheaded by Mayor Daley, we can expect the actual bill to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 million dollars.

And I bet you thought the city was broke!
