The incident occurred inside a second floor unit at 4602 North Beacon Street, near Beacon and Wilson, in the Sheridan Park enclave, said authorities.
Investigators said the offender, described as a blue-eyed white male in his 40s or 50s, stabbed the victim in the chest with a knife.
One officer described the crime scene as a “big mess.”
When asked if the victim's injuries were serious, the cop said the victim was “stabbed pretty good.”
The patient was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in unknown condition.
Citing police communications, the incident appears to be domestic related.
At the time of this report, the assailant was still at large.
UPDATE: At 10:36 p.m., authorities said the victim was in critical condition.
UPDATE: Police identified the offender as Steven LeClair. LeClair is known to hang out in the area of Gill Park, and frequents the Hotel Chateau, said officials.
UPDATE: Around 11:06 p.m., a knife was recovered at 1364 West Wilson Avenue.
I am a M.A. and came outside after I heard the shouting. The man was unconscious and had a t-shirt to his chest to control blood flow. Our fire department responded promptly after 911 was called and we are grateful. No one else came outside despite the screaming, but everyone didn't mind looking out their windows. There is a group of people who fight everyday outside and in and live in one apartment. They throw beer bottles against walls and loiter outside all night. When the cops come, they leave only to go back outside and continue their behavior. They put things in the doors to allow anyone to come in and holler at all times of the day to be let in. This is a tragedy that is the result of this fighting coming to a head. I spoke to a tenant who lived in their section and she has complained of their fights to the landlord, who did nothing. We will be moving soon our family cannot take more of this.
ReplyDelete^ I didn't want to be sarcastic but after reading the first sentence my response was going to suggest that you just move. I'm glad you are. I'm sick and tired of those people complaining up there both in person and otherwise. It's as if they're those type of people that couldn't survive without drama by the hour in their lives.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are some people with good intentions that live in Uptown and some just using it as a stepping stone to a better way but we were just discussing them this weekend. They're ghetto fabulous or hood-rich too although just not Black. Sorry, needs to be said. Buy/rent something smaller or without stainless steel appliances in a better area. You might just have to hoof it to your favorite organic cupcake store or weed supplier though.
I would rather be in Englewood than UpTown. At least the crazy on the south side look crazy, north side a guy walking down the street with a Starbucks cup will suddenly lose his mind and attack someone.
ReplyDeleteI'm grew up on the southside not far from englewood and I rather live up here in uptown
DeleteWhat is an "M.A."???
ReplyDeleteI am a Medical assistant as well as a pre med student. So if someone is going to be critically injured I'm not going to look out a window and text my friends about it like all my neighbors did.
DeleteI ended up living in Uptown for my 2nd apt in Chgo after I relocated for my work from another state w/ not nearly enough of a pay increase to compensate for the big cost difference in housing / rent. The willingness to "sacrifice" wore off quickly... learned it's pretty much you're rich OR poor w/ everything a tradeoff. At the 1st dump apt, but was in a relatively "safe" neighborhood, I found a homeless guy snoring on the floor outside my apt door, he got in a supposedly "secure" bldg. What a joke, the landlord said "oh that's just so & so...he's harmless." Yea, well you try stepping over him to lock your door as you leave for work in the am. So I answered an ad for a "soft-loft" 2 flrs, gourmet kitchen 11/2 baths, huge. Too good 2B true for $600? Well.. guess where? Uptown off Wilson, pretty much in major lockdown w/ a remote controlled back lot parking & barred windows. The rehabber himself lived in the bldg w/ his wife, both from Boston, so I figured w/ them there, maybe it would be ok. He made me walk the block before I signed the lease to see what I was moving to. The apt was incredible, easily would have been $1400-1800 back then in the "better" neighborhoods, where I would have rather lived, but couldn't afford. I had a car so didn't have to walk to that L stop, but my BF moved to Chgo & hated the walk. The bldg later sold as "condos." I probably wouldn't ever make a choice like that again, now that I'm older, I can see all the "what if's" I was lucky I had options & eventually moved, some people don't. So many people around there have mental & physical addictions & don't know anything else. The problem is...compassion doesn't keep you safe, people who have no monetary resources or the mental compacity to pull themselves out...are destined to stay & crime/violence IS their life either as a way to survive or as a victim. What's the answer? It's part of the reality of a big city, with the have & have nots. Very sad, but true. I count my blessings I've had the ability, means, & oppty not to have to live as some do. I just try not to judge, I could have been anyone of those....
ReplyDeleteHey first poster, I didn't come outside to help because a) its not my job to be covered in some strangers blood and B) its not worth risking my life to be near a retaliation shooting/stabbing. I tried it once and came close to being shot. get off your high horse and worry bout yourself.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you get off your high horse and act human for once this shows what kinda trash you are who isnt willing to help those in need. God knows if you where in that position I'm pretty sure someone would care after all everyone is a person and they deserve a chance to live
DeleteTo the "MA" - who are you to criticize other people's responses? You stated that the same people every day are fighting, throwing glass bottles, and leaving secured doors open to let in anyone off the street.
ReplyDeleteIf those were my neighbors, and I saw that behavior from them daily, there's no way in hell I would go out to help them when one of them injured the other. Not only do I not want to be caught in the crossfire, but when did their problem become my problem?
We have suckers like you that get paid to make this their problem. Hopefully when you get shot in Englewood or Uptown in the middle of the night responding to one of these, they finish you off, so you're not the next drain on the healthcare system.
Let the fucker bleed. I don't live in bullshit Uptown so I don't have to deal with that.
^Maybe you shouldnt comment then huh
ReplyDeleteBy the Way this is not the MA just cause it says Anonymous but if you dont care get stop commenting on here its nice to know people have a soul and arent selfish what goes around comes around sweetums
ReplyDeleteTo the Anonymous bastard of September 06, 6:11 PM. You are an ignorant lowlife. I hope you have fun lying in your own blood while others do what you do. 'Let the fucker bleed.'

ReplyDeleteHotel Chateau, the Lawrence House, the Lawson YMCA, the Irving Park YMCA, the "Lorelai" and other SROs need to go away, NOW.
ReplyDeleteI say enlist those fine young men who live there, they can fight for Uncle Sam's oil interests, all that combat pay will let them get a real apartment when thy get back, provided they survived their tour of duty.
Yeah, I'm not gonna risk contact with a strangers blood. I'll be the first to call 911 like I did, but that's it. Have fun getting covered in someone else's blood. I'm glad you think its everyone's job to conjure up medical training and risk their.own lives though. thanks for telling me what I should do.
