Talent in Chicago's Subways: Part 3

Photo: YouTube/heychristiannam

The music at the Jackson Blue Line subway station, 328 South Dearborn Street, was so good, a female commuter almost hopped off the platform!

  1. I sure wish they would prohibit these so-called performers from making their noise in the subway system. It's usually horrible sounding and loud. Also, we're involuntarily subjected to this noise whenever we try to use public transportation. If we wanted to listen to this racket we could go to a club or theatre to take it all in. However, I don't like being forced to listen to this loud garbage. It's imposed on us.

  2. Really Anonymous@8:12, are you serious? These street performers are doing something to "earn" some money rather than begging and panhandling. Some of these performers are pretty damn good and I appreciate that they are giving us something in return for their donations. I don't like some of the "racket"..like the bucket boys, but most sound pretty good to me.

Many people have been discovered performing in subways across this country..Crystal Bowersox for one...

People amaze me. They bitch about the beggars and panhandlers and bitch about those giving us something for our money. Here's a suggestion...WEAR EARPLUGS!

  3. They don't add any character to your city, nor does the 5'1" Asian dude screaming about Jesus Christ outside the Water Tower Mall for 3 years. They are a nuisance. I agree, if I wanted to be "entertained" or informed it should be on my own terms.

You don't like the "bucket boys"? Well I don't like the bucket boys either. I also don't like hearing people sing - that can't. No difference. Thank God for ipods.

  4. .....and who the hell is Crystal Bowersox? You're argument holds no merit. Bette Midler was "discovered" in a gay bathhouse.

  5. ...and Towanda, you're the one arguing people should NEVER wear earplugs or ipods because they're "stupid" and "ripe pickin's", and, and, and. Is it drugs? Seriously, I've seen your name on forums EVERYWHERE. You were logical in some aspects but you're all over the board anymore. You love to argue just for the sake of it. No consistency at all.

  6. Anonymous@11:46, Like I care what you think of me. Having earphones in your ears because you are listening to an IPod and wearing earplugs are 2 different things. I doubt anyone is going to come up to you and steal your EARPLUGS!
You better check your facts about my "so called" comments. Put up the line where I call people with Ipods or checking out IPads "stupid". Also, from your last dig at me, put up the line where I use "GD"..never happened and since you can't put those lines up, STFU! I don't make comments to "win friends and influence" people. I say what people like you are too PC to say.

"they don't add character to your city"...I guess you don't live here so who cares what your opinion is about my city? Go away.

At least I do not HIDE behind "Anonymous"

  9. @Anonymous who is a huge Debbie Downer: how can you not appreciate music? You're calling towanda miserable, but look at yourself. You walk around the city each day and night cursing at anyone who plays their music in subways or on the street? If they're bad, you don't have to listen to them. If you're waiting for the el and they're playing, well it looks like you'll have to deal with it for 10 minutes. Big deal, man. Stop complaining and let the music roll.

  10. Anonymous@2:54,
Miserable??? Not even close. I was defending the street performers. You? You were putting them down and then singled me out, as usual. What I am, is fed up with people like you who don't appreciate those who give us something for the donations we give them. Fed up with people like you putting people down trying to at least do something to earn money. You're the one that needs to LEAVE. This is part of this city and many other cities across this country. You need to travel more.

    Anonymous@12:20,
    thank you and right on!

  11. I want to see a hard rock band or maybe some ska in the subway instead of the usual twangy douchebag crap

  12. That lady's dancing reminds me of the people dancing in the street in Blues Brothers during the Ray Charles song scene.

Towanda - A different Anonymous here. There are some problems with drummers and "bucket boys" that don't apply to an acoustic guitary playing buskar like Crystal Bowersox. They play at a volume loud enough that could hurt a baby's or kid's hearing, especially in a subway tunnel. But much worse: you often see the bucket boys downtown during the business/school day. Office workers should be able to do their work without being forced to hear drumming, that's the point of a downtown and is what creates money for city services. Also, why aren't they in school? I see a certain racism with white people who excuse the truant bucket boys by saying "it's good that they aren't stealing" as if that's the low standards we should have. If they were white kids playing a suburban downtown they'd be calling the cops to haul them into school!

  16. The reason you aren't gonna see Rock or Ska is because those two require more complex instruments for a subway show . I seriously doubt that they would be dragging that kind of equipment into a subway station. Like instruments and cords. Plus whoever made the comment about the music being too loud for baby and children ears if you bring in ska or rock into the subway well, if you've been to a live show you do know then it is way too loud for their ears. I am sure a bucket, or a little drum, etc. would not make a high enough decibel to really effect a baby in a short amount of time you are waiting for the subway down there just move away from them. If you are solo if you have earbuds put them in. This is how they earn money and get their exposure out. Not everyone has connections in the music industry some people really do start on the bottom. I can already see it..the ones who are bitching about them being annoying One of these guys or girls are gonna make it big and they are going to say back in the day we played in the subway stations in Chicago and its gonna click you remembered walking right by them never throwing a dollar in your gonna remember this article but im sure your gonna tell everyone else that oh I loved his/hers music I knew they were gonna be something. Cut them some slack.
Maybe they need to take away cell phones in the subways because I do not need to be subjected to all the woes of your personal life now that is an awful sound...
