Gil Scott-Heron, Chicago native, dead at age 62


Controversial poet, author, musician, and Chicago native, Gil Scott-Heron, is dead at the age of 62.

Scott-Heron, who had a tremendous influence on the hip-hop movement, died Friday, May 27, 2011, in New York.

According to ContactMusic.com, the 62-year-old became ill after a trip to Europe.

Scott-Heron was rumored to be HIV positive and he also struggled with drug addiction.

One of Scott-Heron's most memorable tunes, The Bottle, was a dance floor favorite among Chicago House Music fans.

  2. Gil Scott-Heron was a gifted lyricist and a visionary, but his life seemed to be plagued with demons. I guess he did what most creative people do - he turned his pain into art.

  3. By the way, my other favorite Scott-Heron song is Angel Dust. I was kid when that song came out. Back then, I was shocked that someone could make a song about drugs and get it played on the radio! LOL!
