This is a very very bad area with drug dealers EVERYWHERE! If your're out, "sitting in a car at 4 AM", you're not only asking for trouble BUT, possibly waiting to get hooked up with drugs. Uptown is going to need all the luck, police and community involvement, they can get this summer. It's not looking too good now! RAID! RAID! RAID!
ReplyDeleteTowanda, it was a painful decision, but I am so glad I left Uptown. The gun violence is too much!
ReplyDeleteI lived in one of Uptown's most infamous high rises, every minute there I feared for my life. Now, I live with boring people, it's awesome
ReplyDeleteI am a proud resident of Uptown and have never felt threatened in my neighborhood. The last thing Uptown needs is for good people to leave the neighborhood based on irrational fear. I would live in Uptown any day over Wrigleyville where sexual assault, muggings, and break-ins are too regular of an occurence. Uptown does not deserve the neagative reputation it is given. It has it's weaknesses, and the gang violence and drug dealing absolutely needs to be dealt with, but things have not escalated to the point where I would ever choose to leave. I honestly wouldn't move anywhere else in the city.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous@9:28..I agree that ALL of Uptown is not bad but I would ask where you live in Uptown and if you shop locally. Argyle & Kenmore, Argyle & Winthrop, Lawrence & Sheridan, Wilson & Sheridan/Broadway..these are VERY VERY dangerous areas. West of Broadway has gotten bad as well and while this is a portion of Uptown, these are the main thoroughfares in the area. Moving out of a neighborhood because of the crime and violence is "partly" what created the "white flight" of the south side. Living in an area where there is so much crime and gang activity is admirable but I would also ask you how you participate in your community to help curb the violence. It is ALL one community. You make it sound like what's going on in an area of your community that you don't live in, doesn't effect you so you aren't concerned. Again, it is ALL one community.

ReplyDeleteI used to be a proud resident of Uptown, too. In fact, I miss that neighborhood, terribly!
When I moved to Uptown in the early 90's, shootings were virtually unheard of. Sure, there were hoodlums, prostitutes, and the homeless/mentally ill, but with a little maneuvering, you could avoid walking into trouble.
Flash forward to today... people are being shot in broad daylight on busy streets; large groups of predators are wandering around looking for their next victim; and drugs are openly sold on nearly ever corner.
And don't try and tell me that the drug dealers in Uptown aren't bold as hell. I have seen them in action, with my own two eyes. They have absolutely no fear of the police, or being arrested.
I'm sorry, but I don't work my ass off everyday, so I can come home and mingle with convicts and dodge bullets.
Uptown gets a bad rap, there are nice people there. This shooting was terrible but I chilled with a lot of people there and not everyone is a trick
