Lakeview: Man reportedly attacked by suspect who wanted to pet his dog

A North Side Chicago man has shared the details of his recent attack with Chicago News Report.

On April 23, 2011, around 9:55 p.m., a man says he was assaulted on the 3400 block of North Halsted, near the corner of Halsted and Roscoe Streets in Lakeview.

The victim said he was approached by two Hispanic men, possibly Mexicans.

One offender, who appeared to be 25-years-old and was wearing a black leather jacket, said he wanted to pet the victim’s “puppy”. When the complainant warned the man that his dog might bite him, the offender reportedly said, “I’m not talking to you!”

When the suspect purportedly reached for the victim’s dog, the victim blocked the suspect with his arm. According to the complainant, that’s when things turned violent.

"He grabbed my arm and started to pull me. He swung a few times, missed me, but hit my glasses. Then he pulled my glasses off and broke them. I blocked him as best I could. I swung at him, but my other arm was holding my dog at bay. He pushed me into a parked truck and hit me in the face," said the injured party.

After the alleged assault, the second suspect who didn't physically participate in the crime, suggested they run before the victim called the police, said the complainant.

Both men were last seen running northbound through the 7-Eleven parking lot at 3407 North Halsted Street.

Once again, the attacker is a Hispanic man believed to be in his mid-twenties, approximately 5'7" to 5'8", and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black, waist-length leather jacket and his black hair was combed to the side. He also spoke with a noticeable Spanish accent.

The second offender, who reportedly watched as his friend allegedly assaulted the victim, has a similar description. However, he is approximately 150 pounds and was wearing a tan leather jacket.

The victim is offering a $1000 reward to anyone who has information leading to the suspect's arrest and conviction.

Based on what the victim told me, several people witnessed the incident.

  4. What the hell does it matter if it was a "Drama Queen with a dog"? People really do not have any right to push people around. Where has the respect gone? The guy warned them his dog might bite them so why not respect that and not pet the dog? Sheesh, people are becoming meaner and meaner. I'd bet if the guy let his dog lose on these morons and they got bit, they'd be suing and or pressing charges. What idiots. Too bad he didn't let the dog lose on them, would have served them right.

  5. The victim's dog was too small to defend itself, let alone its master. The suspect who allegedly said he was going to "pet" the dog, probably had something more sinister in mind.

  6. Correct, Timothy. They were going for his wallet next. No doubt. Sounds like a smart pet owner & citizen to me in that neighbor 'hood'. It's sad but in this "diversityland" you can't trust anyone. Hell, a co-worker's husband was gaybashed right around the corner there - and he's not even gay!
