Class action lawsuit: Dollar Tree cheated employees out of pay - created unsafe work, shopping environment

The national multi-billion-dollar discount chain, Dollar Tree, has been accused of cheating employees out of their hard-earned wages and creating an unsafe shopping and work environment.

In September 2010, a national class action lawsuit was filed against the discount retailer. Among the charges listed in the complaint, are multiple alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Employees have accused Dollar Tree management of instructing them to work through their lunch breaks and forcing them to work off the clock.

WGN news cameras documented the conditions inside a North Side Chicago Dollar Tree store. The news footage captured merchandise strewn about the store's aisles - shelves propped up with cans and plastic containers - and food and other debris littering the floor, underneath the shelves.

The questionable conditions inside the North Side Dollar Tree store have never been reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), said the WGN news report.

  2. My husband works for the store in Manhattan Ks. They keep cutting his hours and he is being told it is corporate ordered. He get 7.25 per hour and rarely gets to work 3 days or 15 hours per week. The new stocker manager already quit and didn't even work there a week. If they are a multi-billion dollar corporation why do they treat the help like slave labor. Or should i ask what type of front are these stores being used for.

  3. dollar tree has been steeling wages from employees for years, they make you work off the clock, treat you like garbage, lie to you and cheat you out of wages that are owed to you. They have no intregity, many lawsuits have been placed against this company, the worst place to work anywhere. If the public new how dollar tree is, maybe they would boycot and dollar tree would go out of business. I don't know how they get away with the things they do to employees.

  4. I got a job as cashier at Dollar Tree, Madison TN through vocational rehabilitation who paid my salary for 1 year. As soon as voc. rehab stopped paying, Dollar Tree stopped calling me to come into work. They terminated me without notice which I don't think is right.

  5. I work for Dollar Tree and I have been there for over 14 years, I don't get paid as much as the new hires get and I just got my big raise of $.15 . I DO NOT even make $9 an hour.
I also fell one day and broke my ankle and was told no sick pay just because I fell in the store doesn't mean my being there caused it. I was off work for 7 weeks ...I lost my home and many things as I had no income.
Also just 2 weeks ago I admit I made a mistake by saying something I should not have and I was suspended for 2 weeks. Then one of our Assit. mangers said I should be fired and should have long ago as she went through my files and said I had made many mistakes. She is not even supposed to ever be in those files. What will happen to her is not yet known. We will see ........

  7. I worked for dollar tree in Savannah, TN. , I was a cashier and stocking, and unloading the truck. Every shift I worked I was told to clock out and back in at a certain time, while continue to work during my breaks and lunch.
when the truck arrived, I was told to clock out but continue to stock.
when I ask questions about it my hours was cut down to a couple of hours a week. After that I was no longer needed. She made it a living hell to work there, I was treated very bad. I worked many days off the clock!!!!!!!!
