More details are starting to roll out in the shooting death of a Chicago police officer on the 2900 block of South Seipp Street, yesterday evening.
The slain officer, who is said to be in his mid-to-late forties, was shot and killed inside his black SUV, around 6:30 p.m. yesterday.
Investigators say the shots were fired from within the officer's vehicle, and his gun and wallet were found at the scene. There are also reports that the officer still had a cigarette in his lips, when his body was discovered.
These circumstances suggest several things: the officer knew or was comfortable with his killer, the attack was a complete surprise, and he was most likely shot in the head; killed instantly.
Since robbery is an unlikely motive in this case, the streets of Chicago are starting to buzz with alternative theories. One theory is this was a gang execution. If this is true, why was a gang member sitting inside the officer's vehicle? A more chilling possibility is the officer was killed by another cop. This theory may seem unfathomable to some - but it is still a possibility; especially in Chicago.
I have spoken to several people in the Wrightwood community, where the off-duty officer was murdered, and they say the area is plagued with drug dealers, prostitution, and robberies. A lot of the residents feel an additional police station is needed in the area.
