Howard Brown Health Center in Uptown Closing?

Howard Brown needs to raise $500,000 before the end of the year, or it may have to close it's doors --- leaving behind thousands of LGBT patients who depend on their medical services.

The Howard Brown Health Center at 4025 North Sheridan Road, in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, is in such dire straights, some of the employees are talking about foregoing their paychecks, just to keep the business open.

The medical facility's financial troubles are the result of the mismanagement of 3 million dollars in federal grant funds. An audit revealed the Uptown, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender health center used $500,000 of federal grant money to cover its operations costs; now they desperately need that money back.

Earlier this year, the National Institutes of Health investigated Howard Brown for mishandling funds allocated to the Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). The research tracked the health of HIV + and HIV - men, for nearly 30 years.
