Earlier this month, Chicago News Report received an email that indicated an attorney wanted to subpoena CNR's "records"... a few days later, someone tried to hack into my blog.
On May 14, 2012, I received an email from a woman named Patricia Gutierrez.
Gutierrez, who identified herself as a Cook County public defender, said she wanted to contact my "legal department", because she needed to "subpoena my records".
When I asked Gutierrez to be more specific about the information she was looking for, she said, "I have an attorney that would like to contact your legal department. I do not know specifically what records the attorney would like to obtain."
After I explained that she was contacting a blog - not a news organization - and that there were no "records", only news articles, which were published online - I never heard from Gutierrez, again.
However, on May 16 and May 17, someone attempted to reset the password on my blog and gain access.
Their attempts were documented by emails sent to me via Blogger's support team: "Blogger received a request for a recovery email associated with http://www.chicagonewsreport.com/. If you did not request this email, you may ignore it. Each team member will receive notice of their own personal sign-in information."

I'm glad to hear the truth-haters' attempted shenanigans were thwarted. Chicagoans NEED blogs like this, Second City Cop, Shaved Longcock and others that tell the stories that major media outlets choose to ignore. I don't pay for a subscription to any local newspapers, but would happily donate to help defray the cost of your operation. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
ReplyDeleteYes we definitely need truthful news!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSomething similar happened to Detective Shaved a little while ago, and his blog was fairly similar to yours. He didnt receive a password reset email though, his blog just became unavailable and then ALL the posts were gone one day. I'm not sure if he ever found out exactly what happened, but its back in his posession now and hes posting great stuff.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to guess at a culprit, I would say the local Anti-Racist groups would be most the likely. You probably read about the group of "white supremacists" that were attacked in Tinley park last week, right? Well a blog called The Blaze did some research into the incident and found out the attackers were part of a website called AntiRacistAction.org. This website has links to various chapters, including the Chicago Chapter that was allegedly responsible for the attack (SouthsideAntifa). Not only does this ARA group feature posts on websites they have hacked/defaced, but the top post right now is about one of their blogs getting hacked.
So, they have a motive and have clearly been involved in similar hacking incidents recently. That isnt enough to prove they were responsible for it, but maybe it atleast merits another social network investigative piece!
As for the lady that emailed about records, she just sounds like a dumbass. But to check if shes a real public defender or not, try googling her email address or searching facebook/twitter/linkedin with it too. If there are no results, I bet it was fake and an attempt at social engineering.
Anyway its great to have CNR back. This is one of my favorite outlets for local news and I was sad go see it go. Good thing I still follow you on twitter, or I might not have noticed it was back!!
I don't understand what it so wrong about this blog? I see it as a great tool to alert citizens on what is going on in their neighborhoods resulting in them taking proper precautions. It's also helpful to post the descriptions of the offenders-- nothing wrong with that. I don't care if the criminals are Black, White, Purple, or Red....a proper description and picture is always helpful.
ReplyDeleteAs for the reader comments, I do not take any offense whereas it's freedom of speech. I find it humorous that those who make an issue out of racial slurs are those who most likely will have racist tendencies-- or as I call them "closet racists". It reminds me of super religious people who frequent church but go on a killing rampage.
I am glad to have CNR back and don't allow the anti-racist groups to bully you. If they want to do something about racism, they need to be more productive and address Jesse & Al, the most racist of then all.
And I would also like to add that every race has criminals, depending on the demographics, some cities will have more crimes committed by certain groups. It does not mean they are all like that!
Quite frankly, when this site shut down, I quit patronizing some areas of the city (businesses) because there is no other media source to find out what is REALLY happening out there.I must admit, under obvious pressure and criticism, The Trib has been giving the "whole story" more frequently as of late. Glad your back CNR!
ReplyDeleteIf you have an IPhone get the authenticator for Google. Your Google account and sites will have more safety. Yes it's a pain in the ass when using it but its better then being hacked
ReplyDeleteIt's prolly Phoebe and her fifty pound baboon twat lips.
