Armed robbery near Uptown church
Police are investigating an armed robbery near a North Side, Uptown neighborhood church.
Sunday, around 1:40 p.m., a man was robbed at gunpoint in an alley behind the 4500 block of North Sheridan Road, said police.
Investigators said the incident occurred behind 4548 North Sheridan Road, next door to the Uptown Baptist Church.
The offenders were described as two unshaven black men in their 30s or 40s.
The gunman, who was armed with a black automatic handgun, was wearing a red and gray jacket. The gunman’s accomplice was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.
Police said both suspects were carrying “raggedy” backpacks.
After the robbery, the victim went to the Illinois Currency Exchange at 4559 North Broadway and called for help.
At 1:49 p.m., officers stopped two possible suspects near Sheridan and Belle Plaine, but quickly determined the men were not involved in the armed robbery.
At the time of this report, the suspects were still at large.
