Man robbed at Berwyn Red Line station, thief makes daring escape

Around midnight, a CTA passenger was mugged at the Edgewater, Berwyn Red Line “L” stop at 1121 West Berwyn Avenue.

A crook snatched the commuter’s iPhone, jumped onto the “L” tracks, and ran southbound towards the Argyle station at 1118 West Argyle, where he disappeared into the night.

The offender is a black man in his twenties with a dark complexion. He is approximately 5’8” and 140 pounds.

Police said the suspect, who was carrying a backpack, was wearing a white sweater, a dark-colored cap, and blue jeans.

The criminal is still at large.

  1. Another iPhone snatched, another broke dark skinned black thug committing the crime, another low-life from Uptown that can't keep his demonic urges away from the Edgewater side... another day! How charming.

The crazy part for me, is that I was just over there on Berwyn at Jewel, shortly before midnight.

  2. I was there around 12:20am, glad I missed it. I guess that's why there was a police Tahoe sitting outside.

  4. @ Skokie! Crooks come in all shades. What does the color of the person's complexion got to do with anything? Some people are so damn racist they stink!

  5. HA! If I'm racist, then I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Get mad at my comment all you want, asshole! But if I received just a PENNY for every time there was a report that said: "The offender is a black man in his twenties with a dark complexion"... well, I would indeed be a VERY rich man!!

  6. Hate to say it, but I agree with Skokie. Perhaps it's racist, but statistically, it's correct. From what I read and see at the local CAPS meetings. 80-90% of reported offenders are black, rest Latino, maybe a white, and how often Asian? Don't get offended by the numbers. If that makes me racist, I own it.

  7. It was not a "man" who had his iPhone stolen, it was me. A woman. Strange how this report is inaccurate but to make matters clearer, I was sitting on the train and the man ripped the phone right out of my hands and ran off the train. I ran after him, yelling for help and for someone to stop him but once he made it to the end of the platform he jumped off and onto the tracks.

  8. Glad you're safe Erica. Here's something they tell us in cap meetings..don't sit by the exit if you are using an Ipad, Iphone or Ipod. Better yet, don't even have that high tech stuff out on the trains. Theft is very high on the trains now. Maybe they need undercover marshalls on the trains now like they have on the planes. I must say that ghetto thug has some "big ones" to run down the rails but than, they have to fear of ANYTHING or ANYONE! Something definitely missing from their DNA/genes.

Erica, did anyone besides you, chase the offender?

  10. Thanks for the response. I asked that question because, the person who called 911 said, "a man is being chased down the platform by another man". That's why I identified the victim as male.

Regardless, I am glad you were not injured.

  12. I'm really sick of how nobody in this town can have anything of value without feeling threatened or having it stolen or destroyed. A person always has to act as if they are under siege.
Dress down, don't wear jewelry, don't use iphones on the CTA, don't go out at night, walk with friends, carry pepper spray, etc etc. This is living?

  13. Pete, since the mid 1960s, avoiding certain neighborhoods and behaviors (sans iphones) has been the norm. :(
