Oprah's new channel, OWN, continues to struggle

One might say that Oprah's brand-spanking-new-network, OWN, is getting owned by its dismal ratings.

No one knows better than I do, that sometimes it takes a while to get a huge project off the ground; but despite Oprah Winfrey's mega-star-power, the Queen of Talk's latest TV venture seems doomed.

On January 1, 2011, OWN replaced the floundering Discovery Health cable channel. Months later, the Oprah Winfrey Network appears to be circling the drain.

In a February 27th article, The New York Times reported the struggling network has failed to match the ratings of its barely-watched predecessor, Discovery Health.

Adding to OWN's woes, are “The Gayle King Show” and "Your OWN Show".

"Your OWN Show" is a complete flop, and the Gayle King Show's ratings are so low, Nielsen hasn't even bothered to count the viewers, said The New York Times.

Our America, hosted by Lisa Ling, showed promise after snagging an estimated 733,000 viewers. The network was so impressed, they ordered six more episodes. Too bad Oprah's viewers are going to have to wait until October to see them.

Despite OWN's dismal forecast, Discovery Communications is sinking another $50 million dollars into the Oprah Winfrey Network.

  1. Not the "queen" she used to be for sure. This may be her first flop!

  2. Well, time will tell. If Discovery communications is willing to cough up another 50 million, maybe there's hope for OWN, after all.

  3. "OWN, which premiered on New Year's Day, is a 50-50 joint venture with Oprah's production company, Harpo - although 100 percent of the funding comes from Discovery.
The group initially invested $189million, but added an additional $50million last month in return for more on-camera time with the chat show queen.

Seems they were willing:) But I'm a little shocked that they covered the funding and Ms O didn't put a dime in. Nice way to keep your money girlfriend.

I do like "Our America" so far.

  5. Unfortunately Oprah has missed the point of why she was given the gift to educate an audience, it was meant to be in front of the camera and not behind the scenes. We miss her as just her not has some big network executive. She is in the wrong arena. Use the gift you were given gracefully and forget playing with the big guys. Life is simple and the folks that like you are simple too. Get back to where you belong Oprah!

  6. I'm surprised that the OWN station the shows aren'e as good as I thought. I thought the show was much better than the old talk shows that Oprah used to have. I can see why the ratings are so lowest. Nobody wants to watch the same old things all the time, and the shows are for Oprah only not for the viewers. Not so inspiring at all.
