Gay Marriages in Illinois: Gov. Pat Quinn Signs Civil Unions Bill into Law

Today, January 31, 2011, marks a milestone for LGBT rights in Illinois.

Governor Pat Quinn stood before hundreds of witnesses at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 East Washington Street) as he signed the civil unions bill into law; granting same-sex couples the same legal protections afforded to straight couples.

The bill signing makes Illinois the sixth state to legally acknowledge same-sex/gay unions.

The law goes into effect June 1, 2011.

Detractors of the bill are already plotting their political revenge against anyone who voted in favor of the civil unions bill.
