On October 16, 2010, 59-year-old Ollie Basaam, the owner of Munchies at 950 N. Orleans Street, was shot and killed in a robbery.
Police say the crime happened around 9 p.m.
According to investigators, Basaam was shot several times. One report says the Munchies store owner was shot an estimated 6 times. Basaam was alone when the shooting occurred.
Based on everything we have learned, the victim was a generous man. People in the area say he was kind to everyone who entered his store. Customers say Basaam, who owned two stores, often employed Cabrini Green residents, and gave them discounts when they didn’t have enough money to pay for their items.
People in the neighborhood are distraught over Basaam’s murder and they are asking his killer or killers to come forward.
If you have any information on this crime, please contact the police. If you are afraid to speak to the police, contact us at news@ChicagoNewsReport.com and we will pass the information on to the authorities.

I lived in the apartment above Munchies for four years and then a block away for the last five. I had the pleasure of knowing Ollie and considered him a great friend. He was indeed a noted a pillar of the community who did much to help the families of Cabrini & neighbors. But much more than that he was a devoted family man who doted on his wife and two children. He was so proud of his children and his eyes just sparkled whenever he spoke of them. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. I am truly devastated by his loss and pray justice will be served. Rest in Peace Ollie.

I cover a lot of news, but this story really touched me. My thoughts are with his family.
ReplyDeleteThis is shocking,Ollie was a very great, caring man, who treated everyone with respect. He didnt deserve this. I will never forget how he treated me and my children whenever we entered his store. He always had a smile that I will miss. I hope whomever has done this feels the pain that this neighborhood is feeling right now. My prayers go out to his family.
ReplyDeleteThis is sad. I have been going to his store for many years since i was a kid. Ollie was nothing but a kind hearted man. Its a shame an idiot would be so broke and ignorant to rob a small community store like this. May he rest in peace
