  1. There seems to be a lot of fires in these "four up, one down" buildings in Edgewater and Robbers Park. I would personally be afraid to live in one.

  3. ^ My sentiments exactly. And for whatever reason, these are the most still miserable, rude immigrants I've ever encountered. I'm not that old but "back in the day", they used to be nice and grateful and we learned from each other. Sh*t we said "hello" to each other on the street. Take care of your own first. Or better yet, vote with your head not with your heart.

There are too many fires in those areas. Why? I read of two accounts of passed out drunks that had pizzas burning in the oven and another of one looking for something under his bed with a......lighter. Not my type of people to live amongst.

  4. It goes to show that in apt bldgs, one is dependent on others adherence to safety.

At 7:10 am, I was getting dressed for work & running about 10 min later than normal. I smelled smoke & first thing I did was check things I routinely use. The heat kicked on & smoke started coming in from the vents. I picked up my land line phone to call 911 & couldn't get a dial tone. I grabbed my cell & called 911. I grabbed my cat in a carrier, & threw on some jeans, sweatshirt, & shoes...no time for underclothes or socks, & ran out the door. By then other residents were coming out of their apts & going outside as all the fire trucks were pulling up within minutes (nice to have a fire station across the street!)
Turns out the fire started in the apt below me from an oven that was left on. The guy who lived there was not even home. The Fire Marshall said the phone land lines had melted as well as the guy's electronics.... computer screen & TV, everything in his apt. The Fire Maeshall said the heat was so intense if the fire had gone on just 1 more hour, the whole bldg would have gone. (4 floors w/ 4 apts each)
Thankful that I was "running late" in order to notice the smoke, & that I had a cell phone to use. We had a lot of smoke damage & the owner had clean up crews in immediately who did a great job over 3-4 days w/ painting, carpet cleaning, etc.. but even after washing & dry cleaning much of my clothing smelled like I'd been to a BBQ. I hadn't even grabbed my purse or anyhing else of value, only my pet & phone to notify my work. It is really true, you only have moments to grab &. get out.
The tenant who was responsible had admitted to the owner that he had been gone all night & hadn't been home for 24 hours He was evicted & all residents that stayed got 1/2 off their next month's rent. (Don't remember smoke alarms going off until I was running out)
The good thing is that no one died, but there were a couple of elderly residents who did not have cell phones if their land line had gone out. I had the worst damage from being right above his apt, so it was very lucky I was home then. My boss was in from out of town & gave me whatever time I needed off. When I called him as the fire trucks were sounding as they drove up....I "well you're not going to believe this but...."
I would advise anyone who lives in any kind of bldg w/ others to make a suggestion to mgmt to send out safety reminders to all residents from time to time about turning off stoves etc. And get any elderly person you care about one of those easy to use prepaid cell phones in case of an emergency. Either could save your life or someone else's. Sorry so long, but a story worth sharing.

  5. ^^ Very boring and repetitious story. If you live in a building so full of ignorant fools that they need a memo to be reminded to turn off the stove, you need to find another place to live.

  6. Some of the 4 + 1's were built cheaply and have tissue paper walls. Others were built well.
Like immigrants, they are not all alike. The problem with Edgewater is it is a port of entry with too many immigrants to assimilate. Bureaucrats bring them here because the rest of population is liberal and won't object. That includes the he/shes coming from neighborhoods where they have caused crime.

  7. 1:06pm....
No one can know who "the ignorant" people (as you called them) are who might live in their bldg.

It was a careless accident & that was the whole point. By your thought process....all major companies who have LP (that's loss prevention) risk mgmt & safety committees who issue reminders & do fire drills.....should find another place to work "if people are so ignorant" they have to be reminded.

Grow up & get some real life experience under your belt before you make a condesending remark that is blatantly stupid & ignorant yourself.
