Lakeview: Burglary on Newport Avenue

Around 5:50 a.m., a thief broke into an apartment in the Lakeview neighborhood.

The crime occurred on the 900 block of West Newport Avenue near Newport and Sheffield.

The thief stole several items from the home, said police.

Authorities described the burglar as a black man in his twenties.

He was last seen wearing a red shirt and black sweatpants.

Along with the stolen items, the crook was carrying a red umbrella.

Moments after the theft occurred, a witness saw someone matching the criminal's description enter the Addison Red Line “L” station at 940 West Addison Street.

At the time of this report, the burglar was still at large.

  1. Sorry, but when people see someone who LOOKS suspicious in their neighborhoods, they need to call 911 because IF they don't live there, they're up to no good. Lakeview has seen an incredible amount of crime lately and guess whose committing it....that's right, black ghetto thugs. If they're "mingling" call 911! Tell them they're swearing at people, uttering racial slurs, looking like they're casing places, threatening people...get the police there to get them OUT of there!

  3. Yeah, let's call the police on every black person who comes into our neighborhood to spend money in our bars, restaurants and everything else that's keeping this neighborhood thriving. I live on this very block of Newport so this robbery scares the crap out of me, but what scares me more is the racist garbage that people spew on here.

  4. send9;
    I said Black GHETTO THUGS..not every black person. Sheesh, can't people read an article properly? We ALL know how to tell the difference from a black ghetto thug and a hard working, taxpaying contributing black person right???

    Last I checked, it was black GHETTO thugs committing all the crime in Lakeview...have I read the reports wrong??? I stand by call 911 on the BLACK GHETTO THUGS!

    The ONY reason I am distinguishing "Black" ghetto thug here is because that's who's committing the crimes. Otherwise, I don't make a distinction between GHETTO THUGS..white, brown, yellow OR black.

  5. Towanda, you are splitting hairs. people are so afraid, and are likely to judge anyone as a thug. how are they supposed to know the difference between a "black ghetto thug" and just a "black guy?" give them a survey or something? come on.

  6. Colin,
    Ya know, maybe I am "splitting hairs" because when I was first told to do this in a meeting, I thought, "hmm, that puts innocent people at risk. However, the key word in that meeting was "suspicious". If you see someone or something suspicious, call 911, that's what I was told and many many others heard the same thing.

    I would hope we know how to tell the difference;
    they're swearing at people, uttering racial slurs, looking like they're casing places, threatening people, wearing pants to their ankles. People in uptown KNOW what the "uniform" looks like, The same for Edgewater and Rogers Park. People know exactly what to look for and if you went to CAPS meetings, you would too.

  8. In my building on Barry and Broadway a unit was broken in to. A few things were stolen. PEOPLE OF LAKEVIEW IF YOU SEE SOMEONE SUSPICIOUS CALL THE POLICE. It's better to be safe than sorry.

  10. I am all for calling the police on true suspicious behavior, I just don't want to close my eyes to suspicious behavior from those that may not fit my notion of who would a commit a crime.

  11. Send9,
    If you went to CAPS meetings in your neighborhood, you would find out just WHO fits those crimes. Than, it makes it easier when you see 10-15 "people" hanging around on a corner who clearly don't belong there, to call 911. It's simple. Go to a CAPS meeting. They tell us to call 911 BEFORE the crime happens.

  12. too bad the criminal didn't come in my house, I would of shot him dead. any one come through the door or window is shot dead. We need to all arm our selves legally and wait till the criminal comes through the door, pow dead. Ever notice how many cops sitting together at the train stops but they never seem to notice the criminals or make them show ID.
