Man Injured Fleeing Shooter in Uptown

An Uptown resident was injured while trying to escape two men who tried to shoot him. The incident was reported at 2:32 a.m.

The victim was walking on the 1200 block of West Leland Avenue in Uptown, when two men began to chase him. During the pursuit, one of the suspects fired at least two shots at the man.

A concerned citizen reported the gunfire to 911.

While running for his life, the victim twisted his knee. The injured man managed to make his way to the Wilson train station at 4620 North Broadway Street - where he called police.

A police officer on the scene tried to get more details from the victim, but the officer said the complainant was “incoherent”.

At 3:55 a.m., police searched the area near the Darlington Hotel at 4700 North Racine Avenue for shell casings.

As of 3 a.m. no arrests have been made.

  1. Well folks, it's beginning to look like we need to be in our homes, safe & sound by the "witching hour"..midnight, because the nocturnal animals are on the prowl and we're their next meal ticket. Here's a thought, how about more police on the streets at night? And people, for pete's sake, stay out of alleys, carry something, have your phone ready to dial 911, cross the street, go up to a doorway and by all means..KEEP LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER! Oh, I forgot, "crime is down"....

I had to repost this from an earlier article because it seems relevant to this Uptown crime issue and the death of that guy in the Wilson Men's Club.

towanda, I was there in 1987 when Schiller was elected. There were vast amounts of allegations against her and her community organization accusing them of busing folks in from Gary with the promise of a box lunch a 5 dollar bill. I don't know how true that is since it did not happen in our precinct or polling place at Hull House on Beacon but it was reported that there was rampant fraud in other areas of the ward I am assuming those precincts with multiple SROs. It would be pretty easy to load up those places with transients since there is little needed to prove residency other than the word or records of the SRO manager. That might be why she has fought so hard to keep them there.

Also, why there are so many SRO buildings in the area is due to the film industry based in Chicago about a hundred years ago. Essanay Studios on Argyle attracted thousands of hopeful actors to the neighborhood and all these hotels and SRO buildings sprung up to meet the demand. You will notice the great variety of mansions and SRO buildings throughout the neighborhood which is remnant of the Chicago's Hollywood history. The same story is true in Hollywood, CA but the mansions have been torn down or moved into the hills. The SRO's have to be a big part of the problem with this neighborhood. It doesn't make sense to have these great expensive condos along with such a high crime rate.

  3. Lakefront,
As I commented in another article, there are 5 SRO's that I am aware of between Argyle and Lawrence. 2 of them are run fairly well but their residents are pretty much just drunks, druggies & dealers. I think that is a huge issue in Uptown, which than trickles down into the Edgewater neighborhood. I think it would be interesting to know just how many SRO's, Sec8, shelters and low income housing are in the Uptown ward and WHEN this happened. I have heard nothing but bad things about Shiller and it is reflected in the crime that is rampant in her ward because of having all these buildings. They are not monitored, inspected or raided. there are many ex convicts living in these buildings and Shiller knows it. I have also heard that these people are the reason she continued to get elected. I have also heard she does NOTHINg about the crime in her ward and why would she? The people committing these crimes come from the crime ridden buildings she embraces, her "voters", if you will. That's too bad because there are some great buildings in Uptown. Even my alderman, MAS, shut down the nursing home on Argyle & Broadway because of all the ex convicts, dealers, prostitutes and inadequacies of the staff there. Wards are ONLY as good as their Alderman.
I have checke out that Essanay studio and its history. It's really pretty cool, at least what you can see of it.

  4. Hi towanda. :)

Since the mid-1960s, the "be in our homes..." rule has been in effect.
In the years prior to the mid-1960s, for the most part, people could sleep in parks and hang out at the beach at 3 AM-without fear!

I definitely support having more police. :) Unfortunately, Mayor Daley and (most of ? the) aldermen have found other ways to "use" our money, which boils down to no money for more police. :(

  5. Hi Rudy;)
"which boils down to no money for more police. :(" ..which means MORE crime because there aren't enough police to catch the bad guys and they KNOW they can get away with it and that, in turn, endangers the citizens!
Yep, "crime is down"...makes sense to me..NOT!

  6. If crime was truly down, "we" wouldn't need the constant reminder. :|
