Tanaja Stokes, shot to death while jumping rope. |
Some say the shootings stemmed from an argument between three teenagers: two girls and a boy. All we really know is that 20 minutes after that disagreement, one little girl was dead, another was seriously injured, and no one is in custody.
Tanaja Stokes would have been 9-years-old in October. But, instead of planning her birthday party, her family is planning her funeral. Tanaja will never get the chance to graduate from high school; she will never go on her first date; she was robbed of her chance to live a full life - gunned down at only 8-years-old.
Her 7-year-old cousin, Ariana Jones, was badly injured in the shooting, but she is expected to survive. The little girl's skull was fractured by bullet fragments, and doctors are monitoring her condition. For now, they have decided not to operate. My guess is, they don't want to perform a risky procedure, unless it is absolutely necessary.
While many are focusing on the incomprehensible details of another senseless act of violence on Chicago' s south side; who is focusing on a solution? Better yet, can this issue be solved? How do you turn angry, homicidal sociopaths into law abiding citizens? More importantly, how do you protect the rest of us, while we are waiting for this miracle to occur?
