4th victim maced, pepper sprayed, robbed in Lakeview

Early Friday morning, a man at Belmont and Clark Street asked strangers to call the police, after he was maced and robbed.

The robbery occurred around 3:32 a.m., on the 800 block of West Aldine Avenue, near Aldine and Halsted Street, said police.

Two black male offenders sprayed the man in the face with a chemical substance and stole his property, said officials.

One suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a purple shirt underneath. The second thief was wearing a red and white striped hooded sweatshirt.

No arrests have been made.

Police are investigating.

On May 29, 2011, I sent an email to 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney asking him to address the increasing violence in Lakeview. There was no response.

On June 1, 2011, I sent a second email to the Alderman's office. Later that same day, I received the following response from Tom Tunney's Deputy Alderman, Bennett R. Lawson:

"Thank you for contacting our office in regard to the recent incidents you have published in Lakeview. I am reaching out to the Police for more information and will discuss with the Alderman. I will follow up with you shortly."

  1. Looks like we have a pattern here. Some people will jump in with the idea that the victims shouldn't be out late, shouldn't go to bars, be out alone, etc. However, why should we have a curfew imposed on us by the mostly black predators? Why should there be any no-go areas? If a citizen wants to stay till closing time at a bar then that's their business. That doesn't give anyone the right to attack and rob them. We're the ones paying the taxes.
The curfew should be on the predators; they're the ones who should be afraid to go out.
Not sure what an alderman can really do except for the usual formula of trying to get more cops patrolling and holding community meetings to warn residents and assure them that all measures are being taken, they are concerned, and blah blah blah. Aldermen usually have sideline careers such as real estate, so they make their money and then move on.

  2. Pete, I am contacting as many people as I can, to make sure Lakeview's residents are aware of what's going on. If these people aren't stop, someone may end up seriously injured, or worse.

  3. These black offenders are very bold to keep hitting the same area multiple times where there's suppose to be a heavy police presence. Did they move all of CPD to the Southside already? If so, then I hope someone out there has an 'S' on their chest, ready to bust out of a phone booth and catch these animals.

  4. This is absolutely crazy. I just moved to this area and as a single women I am very careful about where and what time I'm out. I agree with you Pete that we as taxpayers should not have a curfew. Fitz - what can we do as citizens besides being our own neighborhood watchdog? I am all for the right to carry and conceal, and I have called my local office and voiced my opinion on that matter and haven't gotten anywhere. We should have the right to protect ourselves against these thugs that come into the more affluent neighborhoods.

  5. Anonymous@9:51, I'm with you on the right to conceal carry but sadly, our elected officials think we don't need that kind of protection while they have it. I carry various items to protect myself BUT they are no match for a gun in your face. It makes me very angry that the law abiding taxpayers have to curfew themselves because of these ghetto thugs prowling/preying on innocent people at all hours of the day & night. More police MIGHT help but we, as a community, need to take the attitude that if we see something, we say something. Flooding the Alderman's office may help as well. Getting involved with community CAPS and organizers may help too. But until WE can protect ourselves with the very weapons the ghetto thugs use on us, we are simply at their mercy.

Perhaps if ALL the taxpaying citizens stayed home one night, didn't go out to eat, didn't go to the movies, the plays or concerts, didn't go shopping, as a means of revolt, the city and the CPD may get the point that if they want us out spending our hard earned money, they better start cleaning up the streets for us to do that. Imagine the revenu lost from that one day. Plus, the ghetto thugs would only have themselves to rob, mug and shoot! Sounds silly I know but something has to be done.

I've pretty much been here my whole life and have NEVER seen it this bad. Pay attention out there people. Know who's around you at ALL hours, change your patterns, cross the street, get on the phone like you're calling 911. PAY ATTENTION!
